Happy Head
Public Artwork by Michael MacGarry
Braamfonntein Werf, Johannesburg

The META foundation and Quorum Holdings are proud to announce a second public art commission that will add to the landscape of public artworks in the City of Johannesburg. The META foundation commissioned the artwork by Johannesburg based artist Michael MacGarry.

The public artwork titled Happy Head is a 230m2 four-sided mural installed on the rooftop of newly renovated residential development The House that Stanley Built adjacent to the trendy 44 Stanley Avenue precinct.

Visible from 360 degrees out to surrounding areas, Happy head functions both as a bold, memorable landmark visible from kilometres away, as well as to subtlety reinforce the anthropomorphic ‘House-that-Stanley-built’ concept by personalising the building, creating a sense of fun and humour instantly accessible to the target demographic. The stark character of the building itself provides a strong contrast with the smiley face character, to further drive both the humour and the element of surprise.
