The studio is a sacred place

14 April  – 10 May 2020
August House, Johannesburg

“The studio is a sacred place,” declares artist El Anatsui, “that you come to do some reflection and thinking.”

In April 2020, we were forced to cancel our regular Open Studio event and as such, we replaced it with an online exhibition titled “The Studio is a Sacred Place”.

This exhibition chose to explore the work of a diverse set of artists working from August House, whilst celebrating the importance of studio spaces as a place that facilitates artist endeavour, experimentation, community and support.

At its heart, a studio space, is an escape from outside distractions, an environment that fosters experimentation, problem-solving, and creative growth. The diversity of artists brings with it a diversity of skills, knowledge, culture and experience.
