Call for applications - Self-Funded International Artists Residency

August House is the largest studio space in South Africa. It was founded in 2016 by a group of artists who wanted to start an authentic and expansive artist community. . Since then it has grown from strength to strength, with it currently supporting over 40 artists. The space is located at 76 End Street, Doornfontein, on the edge of Johannesburg’s CDB. Johannesburg is considered one of the Art Capitals of the world and plays host to many galleries, museums, studio spaces and two art fairs. The CDB also contains large networks of artists. It is an inspiring and vibrant place that really taps into the Continents creativity.

August House offers 3 international self-funded residencies a year for visual artists. These residencies are offered to artists who are able to finance the residency through either their own funds or funding that they have applied for. The minimum length of the residency is 2 months and the cost of the programme is R8000 a month or $470 a month or £377 a month or €431 (based on the exchange rate at the time of writing this).

The programme offers the artist:
• A 38sqm studio space located on 2nd Floor of August House
• A partially furnished accommodation space located on 2nd floor of August House with its own kitchenette and bathroom
• Parking within the building
• Electricity and water included
• Free, uncapped internet
• Access to any events that are taking place at August House at the time of your stay.
• Facilitation of your stay while you are in the City
• A small networking event for yourself and the artists of August House

OR
Arrange your own accommodation within the City and the cost of the programme becomes R5000 a month or $291 a month or £235 a month or €270.

The programme offers the artist:
• A 38sqm studio space located on 2nd Floor of August House
• Parking within the building
• Electricity and water included
• Free, uncapped internet
• Access to any events that are taking place at August House at the time of your stay.
• Facilitation of your stay while you are in the City
• A small networking event for yourself and the artists of August House

The artist is expected to cover all other expenses including flights, visas, health insurance, local travel, meals and subsistence, as well as their own accommodation.

You may apply to this programme at any time, but please be advised that our selection committee only meets quarterly and as such, we suggest that you apply no less than 3 months in advance of your intended visit. It is also noted that Artists should not expect to profit financially from their stay in South Africa as the programme does not provide for or guarantee an exhibition or showcasing of your work. Of course you are encouraged to network, meet people and form relationships.

The programme blocks are as follows:
Quarter 1: February to End May – visit the CPT Art Fair or participate in OpenStudios.Joburg
Quarter 2: July to October – visit the Turbine Art Fair or Art Joburg or participate in August House Open Studios.
Quarter 3: November to end January the following year – Take advantage of summer in the City.
